AI Is a Tool, Not a Shortcut: What This Week’s South Park Got Right
If you caught South Park last night, you saw Randy Marsh spiral after treating ChatGPT like a guru—eagerly affirming whatever half-baked idea popped into his head. The episode (“Sickofancy,” Season 27, Ep. 3) skewered an increasingly familiar dynamic: AI that sounds supportive can make people feel smarter while quietly lowering the bar for thinking. It’s funny because it’s true, and a useful reminder for anyone building brands, writing copy, pitching press, or making decisions.
The Uncomfortable Pattern: AI that Flatters Can De-skill
The risk isn’t that AI, specifically LLMs like ChatGPT, are “bad.” It’s that we’re human. We’re prone to automation bias (over-trusting systems that feel authoritative) and cognitive offloading (outsourcing memory and effort to tools). That combo can dull judgment, especially when the tool always agrees and never gets tired. This isn’t even a brand new theory. Decades ago, researchers showed the “Google effect”: easy access to information makes us remember where to find facts rather than the facts themselves. That’s not evil; it’s how minds economize. But it's easy to stop practicing the underlying skills when everything is one click or one prompt away.
The New Evidence: Speed, Polish… and Cognitive Debt
Several recent studies captured what educators and managers report anecdotally:
Lower engagement & recall with LLM help. An MIT Media Lab study tracked writers over months and found that the ChatGPT group showed the lowest brain engagement and consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic and behavioral levels. AI can be a helpful accelerator (like finding and summarizing the research papers you see above), but it’s not a replacement for the slow, sometimes tedious work that builds and maintains expertise. If you let it do the thinking, you’ll get more content, but not necessarily more insight.
Where This Goes Wrong in Marketing & PR
We see regularly see these four failures in the wild:
Validation theater. Because LLMs are trained to be helpful, they’ll happily rationalize your premise- even when you’re pointing at the wrong audience, a stale angle or a non-story. That “support” feels good and short-circuits hard judgment. (South Park’s exact joke.) Source: Esquire
Prompt, paste, post. The result reads clean and plausible, blending in with what everyone else is doing. However, it can be pretty obvious at times. We recently took over a social media account where many of the previous posts had quotation marks around the text…which is what happens when you copy and paste directly from ChatGPT…
Summaries of summaries add confidence without fresh reporting, data or insight. You feel informed and make worse decisions faster. Think about it- LLMs essentially regurgitate what’s already been said, so how is it going to help you be novel?
Mental muscle loss. Your voice and instincts calcify if AI handles your headlines, media angles and rebuttals long enough. You won't have the reps when you need to think from first principles- on a crisis call, with a skeptical editor, for example, when it’s too late to phone a friend.
How CBPR Uses AI (and Where we Don’t)
We’re pro-tool and anti-shortcut. Our rule of thumb: AI belongs backstage, not onstage. It should support hard work, not be a substitute for it.
Our AI helps with: transcript cleanup, meeting notes, first-pass clustering of comments, surfacing counterpoints we might have missed, rough outlines we’ll rewrite and data extraction from long PDFs.
Our Humans control: positioning, message architecture, original reporting and outreach, risk and ethics calls, media strategy and final copy that carries a brand’s voice.
The Bottom Line
We’re not anti-AI. We’re anti-lazy. The research is converging on a simple conclusion: heavy reliance on LLMs can offload effort in the short run and offload skill in the long run. They’re remarkable tools- not substitutes for taste, reporting or decision-making. If you want work that moves people (and moves numbers), keep the human in the seat.
